With our eyes fixed on a world more unpredictable and threatening than ever. To defend what we hold most dear: democracy.

It is at this historic moment that Democrats Review is being born. To animate the debate of ideas and promote our ideal.

Democrats Review carries this ambition to the scale of a continent facing countless existential challenges.

At a time when the Ukrainian people, admirable in their courage, have now been confronting Russian aggression for more than four years — longer, therefore, than either of the two seemingly endless world wars of the twentieth century. Ukrainian women and men are being helped and supported by the coalition of willing countries, a coalition that honours our understanding of international law, solidarity and fraternity. A coalition that honours our understanding of democracy.

At a time when the European project is being shaken and attacked from all sides within our own societies, with the support of numerous foreign powers determined to weaken and destroy it.

All this comes on the eve of a politically decisive year for our common future, with regional elections due to take place in Germany and major elections to be held notably in Spain, Poland and France.

In France, the stakes are all the more crucial because budgetary tensions continue to intensify, the unity of the people is being fractured, and the country’s European future follows directly from these choices.

Europe will emerge changed from these electoral moments.

In such a fragmented world, Europe must prove its unity more than ever. It is our responsibility to embody and defend, with unwavering determination, its most precious inheritance, its values and its future.

That is why European debates, by and for Europeans, matter so much.

That is why Democrats Review must be kept alive.

With friendship,

François Bayrou

President of the European Democratic Party
